Google Drive/s close not close enough

Found another problem with Google Drive, I was saving my photoshop file into to my Drive folder, as i thought i would give it a go, I made a few changes and clicked save again, OS X then came up with a error saying it could not save as the file was in use. So i saved it my Dropbox and edited and saved again and all was fine.

It turned out that because it was syncing a large file to my Drive folder it couldnt not be used until it was finished

So back to Dropbox for me .

G,Drive is good just to many little problems for me at the moment.

Plus i go to Drive web view and i just hatte it , way to much stuff going on , where as dropbox just looks beautiful, yeah google gives me 5gb free and dropbox only 2gb but even thats no swaying me.

Worth giving it a try.

Using instant search in OS X to speed up your work and play – Using Spotlight

Using Spotlight I was helping a friend the other day with some photo editing and we could not find the file he needed, he was furiously scanning folders, in and out, looking in all sorts of places it even got so far of trying to look through old emails to find the original, after a few minutes of trying to be patient I had to ask, how come you don’t just use Spotlight. Spotwhat? he quickly said.

So that was it I shifted him out of his seat and immediately pressed APPLE(button)+Spacebar and started to type the first few letters of the file name, and up in the right hand top corner of the screen a large list of files dropped down, from there I scrolled down and clicked on the file and it opened as usual into photoshop.

My friend was blown away , they had never scene that little blue box up there before, in-fact they hadn’t even heard of Spotlight.

Since 2005 and Mac OS X v10.4 when Spotlight got introduced I have pretty much abandoned the Dock and Finder and use Spotlight full time.

Spotlight lets us search for files, check dictionary definitions, open contacts and even open Applications. When you type in a search term Spotlight splits the search into Application,Documents,Pictures,Movies and even Fonts, this makes it much easier to find what you looking for.

To give a quick example, I never open or bring into focus iTunes using the dock or find and rarely have no hands on the keyboard, so its quicker just to hit APPLE+spacebar type ‘ it ‘, the Top Hit will be iTunes and apple in its user friendly wisdom has already highlighted it for you so just hit ‘ Enter ‘ and there you have it a lovely new iTunes window

So next time you find your fingers near APPLE+spacebar go ahead and give spotlight a try.

Enjoy.

Scary. It shouldn’t be this simple to steal facebook passwords from a windows XP machine. far too easy.

Below is a video of me stealing my own Facebook login details off a Windows XP sp2 machine with Backtrack 5 using msfconsole and meterpreter.

This is my first real play with Backtrack apart from WEP cracking and im still learning so if you do find any massive errors please be gentle with the comments

I put this video really to highlight how unsafe XP is and really, just generally how it can be really un-secure using other peoples network or even not knowing who is own your network, so make sure you have a good password and your router is WPA protected. ( see my post on how easily WEP protected routers are cracked ), as well as having your computer running the most up to date software

Its pretty scary how easy this was to do and learn, it took maybe a hour to learn and 15 minutes to tweak and perform. I really think anyone could learn this, I only hope they dont.

Take the video for what it is, if you need any help recreating this or have any questions I will do my best to help.

EDIT: If your struggling to see the text make sure you have selected 720p from the little cog icon in the bottom of the youtube video as the default is only low resolution.

Enjoy.

Really Basic, Really Usefull Unix, For Absoulute Beginners

Originally written in 2007

Right, unix, so must know a bit or you would’nt have been looking for this info, but just in case you dont then dont worry because this is going to to be easy, much unlike the times when i was learning unix, i assuming you’ve got a mac, because you would’nt care if you had a microsuck box ( unless you have seen the light and are running live linux cds ( tutorials comming soon )) and if you’ve got linux up and running then this is’nt for you.

Ok first you need to open the terminal program, in os x the terminal is in ……….. applications > utilities > terminal

When its open it will look something like below……….

Ok now that we have that open lets get stuck in

cd = This means change directory by typing in ” cd Documents ” (not including the speech marks ) and pressing enter this command will make the working directory Documents, by working document i mean the same as being in the folder while using the finder ( the one that you are looking at ).

To go back up a folder we use the cd command again but this hit space then put 2 periods in like this ” cd ..

Or if you simply want to return to you home level the type ” cd ~ ” and press enter ( do this now if you hav’nt so that i know where you are.( thanks )

ok you should back where you started

ls = this command lists all the folders and files within the folder you are currently in, by entering this now you should see documents movies sites music e.t.c all listed like below, this should seem familiar as it is the same as if you were in the finder window looking in.

ok cool…..remember any questions, leave a comment and i will get back to you

Another great little command that is very usefull when learning is the ” clear ” command, this resets the terminal so you can see cleary and start again, i know how confusing it all can get when there is so much text on the screen, so keep this command in mind

Ok moving on a little

The next command you should learn is the command to make directories or folders, this command is ” mkdir ” simple is’nt it.

first change directory or folder to ” documents “

cd Documents “………………..will get you there

Ok now enter the command ” ls ” to see whats in there, it will be all your stuff that you,ve been saving to your Documents folder ( like normal ) , now make a new folder called ” unixstuff “

(its better to keep everthing in small caps and with no spaces as this makes typing alot faster).

mkdir unixstuff “……………will do this

Now you a have created you first folder or directory, it’s nice to check use your finder and look in you documents folder or type ” ls ” into the terminal and it will be there.

Ok great that will do for now

I will post up some slightly more detailed stuff later.

How To Change The Login Window Background (OS X)

( originally written in 2008 )

This, as Hopefully all my posts are, pretty simple and yet it’s really cool, which is why its one of the first mod’s i do when i get a new mac.

Follow these few steps and that’s it

Download the background you want from you favourite wallpaper site mine is www.pixelgirl.com

Open the finder window

Double click on the Hard drive icon then,

Double click on the Library icon then,

Find the Desktop Pictures folder and double click

Find the file called Aqua Blue.jpg and duplicate ( right click and select duplicate from the menu ) ( or if you have a sinlge button mouse or hold down the control button then click the file )

Delete the original file ( Aqua Blue.jpg )

Rename your new wallpaper file you’ve just downloaded as Aqua Blue.jpg

Now drag that new file into the Desktop pictures folder and you done

logout to see the new effect……simple yet awesome….is’nt modding cool

And if you dont like it or it doesnt work for you then just reverse these steps.

Shout if need help

Enjoy.

New looking Facebook but still not safe to use!

So Facebook has finally had a face lift and sorted their life out in regards personal privacy, they have made a massive attempt to help and simplify their privacy settings and at the same time made the whole way Facebook looks and feels a whole lot better, which i have to say im more than pleased with , so much so that i have come back to facebook alot recently and spent less and less time on Google+( sorry google ).

I was really keen on Facebook and still am to some extent, but they have lost MASSIVE kudos for STILL! not making HTTPS surfing a default option, for those of you that dont know what HTTPS is, i will explain without it you are simply not safe while on Facebook anywhere except maybe your own house and network, by this i mean if you are in a coffee shop at lunch or even prehaps in work and are on Facebook with out HTTPS on, i can, or any bad guy out there easily steel your FB information and take over your session, deleting photos/video , adding posts and generally causing havoc.

NO HTTPS = NO SECURITY

So, how do i fix this ? , Thankfully its simple ( why such a simple thing is default ? who knows )

    Sign into FB as normal

Click on the little white arrow facing down next to your name and picture and the ‘home’button

Click on the button for ‘Accounts’

Look right and click on the second item in the menu for ‘Security’

Now click on the item to the right ‘Secure Browsing’

And Click the the little square box , make sure you then save you changes.

All done!

Now what really gets me angry is that FB evens calls this ‘secure browsing’ and yet does not want their customers to have a safe and secure session.

So lets look after ourselves and all enable this , its easy and takes 2 seconds, and will help to all types of identity theft.

Google Drive: 2 different ways to upload and a important difference – converting to .gdocs

Make sure if you using google drive and you want the files converted to .gdocs so you can edit them, you dont just drop your files into your ‘gdrive’ folder on your pc or mac, you need to upload them from google docs within Chrome itself.

Now you can finally bin of that naff copy of office you got of pirate bay and work in Chrome.( online and offline )

as always if any one needs any help give us a shout

Shark! The best game to warm up or time waster for a Rock Climbing session

Shark is the quickest way to warm the kids up for any climbing session, aswell as working on some level of balance co-ordination and climbing.

It is quick and easy to brief and even easier to run. All you need is a bouldering room.

So this is a example brief

Right guys! listen up please.

You are now all fish in the sea.

The sea is ( whatever area you have spare in the bouldering room ).

Now as fish you must always! swim ( move ), if you stop moving you are out! then you must tell me your name and take a seat by me.

When I shout ‘shark ‘you must hide in the reef ( get onto the wall ) as quickly as possible, the person ( fish ) with their hands and their feet off of the floor is out ! then you must tell me your name and take a seat by me.

However if you touch the wall before I say shark! you will get electrocuted by electric eals who guard the reefs when there is no shark and you will be out! you must tell me your name and take a seat by me. ( so if I shout ‘stingray’ or ‘sausage’ and they touch the wall they are out )

There is only on more rule and that rule is that once you are on the wall you must stay there until I say ‘swim‘ as you will not be safe from the shark until then, if you fall in before unfortunately you will be out and guess what, you must tell me your name and take a seat by me.

….

And that’s it, make sure you give a little extra brief of course about jumping at the wall, kicking and pulling others off e.t.c and any other specific risk you might have in your climbing centre and then you are away.

Shark, a great little warm up to start a group and a great way to eat up a few minutes of any group  if they become too much to handle on the ropes.

Hacking into WEP protected routers in UNDER 5 mins !

There are a lot of posts about this out on the net already explaining how to do this so I am not going to repeat it here , but it is important, I think, to demonstrate to anyone that reads this just how easy it is for me or anyone else for that matter to crack into your router if you use a certain type of protection found on many many old routers called ‘WEP’. Most good routers now only come with ‘WPA’ passwords as ‘WEP’ is basically broken.

However I still am finding lots of people I know using WEP passwords so rather than sitting outside their house and cracking all of them one by one to prove it I thought I would write it up along with a demo video of me sat outside my mates house, who I wont name, and cracking into his router in around 3 minutes.  that I grabbed off youtube by the user . the scary thing was, there were a lot of videos to choose from.

Once I or anyone else is inside your network then its over I can almost most definetly modifiy you router to kick you off the internet or download some nasty images that you should be looking at or  simply scan you data and hand pick out any passwords ( that are not encrypted ) out of the air, or if you still running xp or vista then anyone with a little knowledge could easily crack into your PC stealing passwords, data or add a backdoor leaving access for ever.

You might not know your using WEP so thats fine and I dont blame you, really your ISP ( internet providers ) should have replaced your box knowing full well that you could get broken into any moment, and so protected there customer but of course that costs them money so they probably gave it a miss.

Its easy to think, as most people I talk to, that it doesnt really matter, but it does, it really does, leaving your network open in 2011 is like leaving your front door of you house open when you go to work, honestly if I am in you network and can basically take what I want and leave it wide open for me to return at a later date.

So enough talk, lets watch the video below.

Credit for this video goes entirely to  . I had a video ready but for many reasons, each one as stupid as the other I have not been able to upload it.

Easy eh!

Thats it I have his password and I am in, now its just a matter of going after what I want.

How to protect yourself

The easiest way, instead of me listing all the ways for all the routers would be to just ring me ( if you know me ) and I will tell you how to do it over the phone or if you don’t then post it up as a comment with your make and model of your router and i can walk you through it.

If you one of those independant types, then go ahead and google something like this ” How to change from wep to wpa ” following by you router name and model ( normally found on the back ), and you will find almost instantly someone explain how to do it.

Once you have changed thats it , you wont notice any difference , except now instead of taking me 5 minutes to hack in it will take me 5 years of constant attacks.

So go ahead and please, please do and like I said. So if i have done my job and your scared enough, but still cant quiet manage to sort it, remember just get in contact with me somehow and I will happily do it for you.

Take care and stop leaving you front door open.

standing desktop workstation 3 month experiment is over

So my standing desktop workstation 3 month experiment is over, conclusion ? ….. its just hurts , so don’t bother.

In fairness it ended abruptly, I came home from a epic day long interview in london which i left at 5am for, grabbed a beer and fancied crashing and catching up with Wired , Arstechinca or something similar but you know what … standing up just ain’t doing it for me any more! standing and sinking a can of 4stripe, like jelly and marmite , just isn’t right.

So Down it came in a normal ( normal if you know me ) rage/relaxed/angry sort of thing. Quickly and not remotely quietly and with my room alot messier than when i got in 30 seconds before it was gone

So that was it im over it a good bit of fun ultimately proving pointless….ummmm i think there could be a theme forming here.

How to Get iPhone tethering to work with Linux Mint 11 ( Ubuntu 11.04 )

You want to get iPhone tethering to work with Linux Mint 11 ( Ubuntu 11.04 ) and you think this would be easy huh.

well it isn’t!

Really i should say that it wasn’t, but now i have done it and worked it out, as always its seems a piece of cake. with this in mind i thought i had better write it up.

To start we need a few things for this to work. first of all you going to need the files for the ‘ipheth’ kernal module that we are going to use, so go ahead and enter into your terminal

git clone git://github.com/dgiagio/ipheth.git

For ‘ipheth’ to work we also need at least ‘libimobiledevice’ so go ahead and enter into your terminal

sudo apt-get install libimobiledevice-utils

then

sudo apt-get install libimobiledevice-dev

Next we need to enter into the ‘ipheth’ folder and compile the source

cd ipheth/ipheth-pair
make
sudo make install

Then

cd..

out to the folder ‘ipheth’

Then back into ‘ipheth/ipheth-driver’ with

cd ipheth/ipheth-driver

Nows the time to compile the source so enter

make

Next we need to type and enter

sudo insmod ipheth.ko

This last step inserts the module we have just created into the computers kernel. Now grab you iPhone and put it into ‘Personal hotspot’ mode and plug it into you computer, your iPhone now it will pop up as usual offering to start banshee or shotwell or whatever preferences you have set but this time also offer or even try to connect you to the internet automatically through Ethernet, if not go ahead and click on your network-manager and select Ethernet auto eht0 or eth1 from the list.

Open you browser and check Google.com or some other favorite site and you will be connected.

Now you have a connection to the internet where there is now Free Wifi, but remember even if there is Free Wifi, you may to choose to use your iPhone as a modem any way because this way you are using your iPhone secure connection instead of the Basically completley insecure Mcdonalds or wherever .

My suggestion would be, if you have the choice, to check FB, Twitter, Gmail etc using the iphone as this way you passwords and browsing is kept secret and then when you just Googling around reading the news or whatever then go ahead and rinse there bandwidth.

Not, Not Top Roping at Avon – Flash Gordan’s Trip to Mars E4 – ‘Empire Strikes back ‘ Part 2

After alot of work from cox and the promise that we would top rope he convinced me into going to Avon for a few hours to have a look at ‘Flash Gordon’s Trip to Mars’ a bold E4 up on the wall above and to the right of ‘Fur Tree Ledge’ at sea walls

With a Static rope thrown over the edge Cox went down and I followed with camera in hand , set up a belay and brought Cox back up the route, which needless to say was look like it would be a nightmare on lead. We swapped over and I had a go, both of us did the small but tricky slab clean but with the little psyche we had kept to agreement of not leading….For about 30 seconds.

I went down to have a look at a more direct route straight up the slab and spotted the route ‘ Anorexic Little Weirdo’ E1 5c  which neither us had done so of course it had to get done, turned out to a great little route. At the top we were definitely done for the day.

Packed up and headed once again for the sofa,CSI and 4stripe.

“Empire” Strikes back – Part 1

Part 1

To make this a quicker post to write as im not feeling the love today lets jump to the main part of the ridiculous trip that me , cox and max took to ansteys cove.

It rained, it rained alot !

And while it rained and rained all night we tried to sleep, curled up in a bus shelter type thing that lives on the top of cliffs.

When we woke up or rather i should say, got up none of us really slept much, I still had to jug up the ropes to get my rope and draws back and Cox had to abseil in to get his gear back. Lots of laughter later and completely drenched but with my gear in hand I headed to the dryness of the shelter and the warmth of the coffee.

A bed for a night

With Cox waiting for his turn to get drenched i handed him the rope and with not much of a exchange of words he ventured into the wet, not more than 25m away and i couldnt see him through the mist.

Max and I , packed are gear had breakfast and coffee and wished cox the best.

After a while, cox strolled back looking disheveled.

Gear back and bags pack we headed straight to the car and off to macky d’s for coffee.

All done and sorted an in macky d’s by 7.3oam and home by 10am and asleep on the sofa by 10.01am , I worked out i was on the ropes at 5.45am , not really how i like to start my day.( makes a good memory though )

The Good part – we did actually get to climb the evening before.

Simply put I didn’t do much apart from put the draws in ‘just revenge’ , Cox fell off  ’uzi in my pocket’ on the on-sight then worked the route and smashed the crux , ( which is ridiculously hard ! ) , Max went for the on-sight on ‘Empire’ and moved pass the low crux fairly easy before his foot popped and was off, Cox tied back on and went for the redpoint and fell at the second part of the crux. Max after another try then on the 2nd redpoint crushed the crux down low and strolled to the top.

At this point it all changed and was quickly over, getting dark and the mist and rain coming in.

Part 2 – After Sleep,CSI and more sleep

Some how cox managed to convince me to take a visit to Avon, this did not work with max, who we have figured is to young to be bitter about not climbing and not stubborn enough to refuse to except how tired we are, any way part 2 to come in another post.

Update >> Here is Part 2

Ta for now
